Clogston ADU

Designed in conjunction with the primary residence, this detached accessory dwelling unit is conceived as an integral part of the overall property rather than a secondary structure. Intended to accommodate extended family and visiting friends, the home provides flexibility while maintaining a strong architectural relationship with the main residence.

Positioned at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, the ADU is organized around a shared parking and sports court that serves as the arrival space for both homes. This common outdoor area creates a natural point of connection while allowing each residence to retain its own sense of privacy and independence.

The architecture continues the geometric language established by the primary residence, with the building form responding directly to the unique geometry of the site and surrounding roadway. The structure is carefully detailed to appear as though it gently floats above its foundation, minimizing its visual impact on the landscape while creating opportunities for light and shadow beneath the building. This subtle expression gives the home a sense of lightness despite its grounded material palette.

Although compact in scale, the interior is designed to feel remarkably spacious. Tall ceilings and generous glazing expand the perceived volume, filling the living spaces with natural light and creating a comfortable, open environment.

The exterior is wrapped in pine tar-coated cedar shingles, a material chosen for its durability, low-maintenance qualities, and timeless character. The rich texture and dark finish establish a contemporary interpretation of traditional craftsmanship while creating a strong visual dialogue with the primary residence.

Rather than functioning as an accessory in the conventional sense, the dwelling completes the architectural composition of the site. Together, the two buildings create a cohesive family compound where shared spaces, thoughtful siting, and enduring materials support a flexible way of living that can evolve.

Every great space starts with a conversation.
